Last week, we talked about 1 Timothy 2:1-4. We learned that we pray for our leaders. It doesn’t matter if you agree with them or disagree, we pray for them. God gives us the government, so we pray for our leaders. We pray that they will follow what God wants, and we pray that our leaders will trust God for salvation.

Today, we think about a related but different question. We pray for our leaders. How much should we trust them?

Let me say it this way. We all know our nation is facing many challenges and problems right now. COVID-19, riots, hurricanes, fires, political confusion, etc. When we pray for our leaders, should we ask God to give our leaders wisdom so they can save us from these problems?

Don’t let that question fool you! Pay attention to the words. Who saves us?

Psalm 146:3 says, “Don’t put your trust in princes (leader), in mortal men (people who will die) who cannot save.” Our leaders are human. We die, they will die. They have authority in government, but they are not greater than us. They can’t save us. Only God can save us.

Psalm 146:5-6 says, “Blessed is the one whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” God saves us. People can’t save us. We know that because God sent His Son Jesus to save us. Jesus already defeated your biggest enemies – sin, death and the devil. If Jesus beat those enemies, He can take care of you. Trust Him, not the government, to take care of you.

Think about these words – support and depend. Don’t confuse those ideas! We support the government. We pray for our leaders. We remind them what God says. But we don’t depend on them. We depend on God. Only He can save us. God might use the government to help us, but He is the one who helps and save us. Don’t trust the government to save you and solve your problems. Trust in God to do that.

Yes, continue to pray for our leaders. Encourage them. Remind them what God says and wants. But trust God to save you from every trouble you face.
